Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I believe technology is at its best when it's approachable and accessible to everyone. Let's do amazing things with the tech we own!

The Dent In The Universe Is The One On Your Wrist

The Dent In The Universe Is The One On Your Wrist

“Dent in the universe”. It’s a quote from Steve Jobs that has resonated with me ever since I first heard it years ago. Apple is of course nowhere near the same company they were back when that quote was said, but I believe the one idea still at their core is that they want to be a positive force in the world, and make it a better place to live. In doing so, I believe they are creating tech to enrich life, and simplifying the process from start to finish. Apple has done this with many products throughout the years such as the Original Macintosh, iPod, and the iTunes Store to name a few. These products and services did an amazing job at simplifying tech as we once knew it.

Fast forward to 2015, 8 years after the iPhone was announced, and Apple Watch is introduced to the ecosystem. This is a product focusing on users to live a better life and be the best version of themselves. I’m not sure we have ever seen a product by a consumer tech company in modern times that has made such a huge impact in the world. If it’s using the simplistic idea and feature such as untethering you from your iPhone, to using the watch to check notifications from VIP contacts, paying for a transaction via Apple Pay in a wirelessly and fully encrypted way, monitoring your heart rate and running an ECG with a tap of a finger in the comfort of wherever you are, or using your Watch in an emergency situation with the built in SOS functionality, the Apple Watch is something that can be customized to help just about anyone. In only a few short years since it’s launch, Apple Watch is the most popular watch in the world. I would still consider this a relatively new product and a very new market with the Apple Watch being the best in town!

Now something that I talk about a lot on this blog is the ecosystem that Apple has cultivated over the years that enable Apple products to interact seamlessly with each other. The Watch is no exception to that. There have been numerous reports that the Apple Watch is legitimately saving lives. So when you hear the phrase “it’s okay, we’re not saving lives here” it turns out Apple is actually making that big of an impact, and with an impact that large comes a sense of social responsibility to the world. It takes me back to my time at the Apple Store Genius Bar, where we found out from a study that any iPhone session that was looked at that day by troubleshooting hardware or software, how many of those devices were used that same day in an emergency situation. We found out that the number was NOT zero. That moment still lives with me to this day. It’s not just a phone, or not just a watch. These are lifelines for people to connect with family, friends, and loved ones.

Let’s talk about emergency situations for a second. It’s something that could happen to anyone at any time, but never something you think could happen to you. Ever since Apple rolled out the SOS feature built into the device, it allowed consumers to think differently about what a wearable piece of tech could be. Apple has also been working very closely with the entire medical industry, using the Apple Watch as a tool to communicate metrics and diagnostics back to your healthcare provider.

There are even some insurance companies that offer “wellness programs” that pay for, or subsidize an Apple Watch for you! Reach out to your insurance provider today to see if you qualify!

Fall Detection 3.jpg

Starting with Apple Watch series 4, the company rolled out another safety feature called “Fall Detection”. This feature will detect if you take a hard fall, and connect you to emergency services if needed. If your watch detects you’re moving, it waits for you to respond on the screen when you can tell it that, “I’m OK” by selecting that option on the screen. If it doesn’t detect you moving for around a minute it will connect you with local emergency services and then send a text message to your emergency contacts that you specified in the Medical ID section on your iPhone. Fall detection is something that is automatically turned on by default only for someone who is over 65 years old who entered their birthday in their iPhone Health App. It’s something that I recommend ALL Apple Watch users to turn on.

To activate Fall Detection on for your Apple Watch navigate to the:

Watch App on your iPhone
Tap the My Watch tab
Tap Emergency SOS
Turn Fall Detection on.

Lastly, the potential of Apple Watch is growing. Introduced in watchOS 6 and macOS Catalina 10.15, the Apple Watch is being utilized by the Mac as a way to authenticate your passwords. I feel we will get to a point where it becomes the way you authenticate to all services utilizing the backbone of the new “Sign In with Apple” feature that was discussed last during Apple’s 2019 Developer Conference.

The Apple Watch is here to stay. Since it is one of the newest products Apple has introduced the last decade, it’s showing some of the most growth and innovation out of the entire product line. It’s going to give consumers piece of mind with the safety features the watch offers. I believe this product will last the test of time as it makes the entire experience accessible to the consumer. This will allow further integration and approachability between humanity, healthcare, and well-being.

Be well friends, and take care of yourself.
