5G Data not working on iPhone 12? Toggle it off to Troubleshoot!
The iPhone 12 is truly a wonderful phone. It’s another first in a category for Apple. Of course this is not “first” in the smartphone market. 5G smartphones have been around for a few years, but now that Apple has adopted the technology it will for sure be here to stay. I’ve had the iPhone 12 Pro since launch day, and I have found that a few times it appeared that my phone had great reception but my cellular data didn’t work? What’s that all about? I can see how this could be frustrating for consumers, as you buy a brand new shiny iPhone that is supposed to be the fastest phone on the fastest networks in the USA and the cellular data comes to a grinding halt.
This is how to isolate an issue if your phone is having trouble connecting to 5G in a specific area.
Navigate to Settings -- Cellular -- Cellular Data Options -- Voice & Data
From this screen you will be able to toggle your data between 5G on (which always searches for 5G connection), 5G Auto (which connects to 5G connection if the phone is able to locate one, and good old reliable LTE which is what a majority of the world still uses for cellular data.

If you are ever in a situation where you can’t load a map, a bus ticket, a website, etc navigate here and toggle your cellular data from 5G to LTE to see if that resolves your issue. It’s a simple workflow but in the heat of the moment I found it highly effective.
This doesn’t seem to be tied to one specific carrier. I have spoken to some tech colleagues who have experienced this across multiple carriers.
5G is here to stay. I truly believe it is technology that will continue to power the future, and empower future generations to come. I say that because I feel that it has the secret characteristic for continued success. That secret is that the tech will continue to get better with NO User interaction. That is what I’m most excited about with 5G. It’s literally going to continue getting better over time and people who buy 5G devices today have the potential tomorrow to have a faster, more efficient, and more reliable experience using their device. That right there is truly going to be impactful for years to come.
